Ionisation chambers
WebIonization chambers operate at a low electric field strength, selected such that no gas multiplication takes place. The ion current is generated by the creation of "ion pairs", consisting of an ion and an electron. The ions drift to the cathode while free electrons drift to the anode under the influence of the electric field. Webfactors for chamber types NE 2561 and NE 2611 did not differ signifi cantly, and a common factor has been used in calibrations since 1995. A comparison of the NPL and ARL absorbed dose standards, via transfer standard ionisation chambers (three of type NE 2561 and one of type NE 2611) in 1995, raised the possibility that the quality-
